Five interesting facts you could learn by visiting websites in the MWCC Reference Directory

  • The Encyclopedia Britannica is the oldest English-language encyclopedia still in print today.  It was originally published between 1768 and 1771 in Edinburgh Scotland.
  • Due to the cost of producing a completely new edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, new editions are usually only published every 25 years or so.
  • The first thesaurus, "Roget's Thesaurus", was compiled in 1805 by Peter Roget.  Entries were listed in conceptual order rather than alphabetically.
  • Flags were originally used to assist in military coordination on battlefields and have since evolved into a tool for signalling and identification.
