  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average was created by ninteenth-century Dow Jones & Company founder and Wall Street Journal Editor, Charles Dow, to monitor the performance of U.S. industrial stocks.  The average consists of 30 of the largest and most widely held public companies in America.  Of the original 12 companies in the index, the only one that remains in its original form is General Electric.
  • During the stock crash of 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost more than 90% of the value from its prior peak on September 3, 1929.  Adjusted for inflation, it took until 1954 for the loss to be recovered.
