  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average was created by ninteenth-century Dow Jones & Company founder and Wall Street Journal Editor, Charles Dow, to monitor the performance of U.S. industrial stocks.  The average consists of 30 of the largest and most widely held public companies in America.  Of the original 12 companies in the index, the only one that remains in its original form is General Electric.
  • During the stock crash of 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost more than 90% of the value from its prior peak on September 3, 1929.  Adjusted for inflation, it took until 1954 for the loss to be recovered.

  • During the twentieth-century, the Dow Jones Industrial Average achieved a compound annual growth rate of 5.3%.
  • The Toronto Stock Exchange is the largest stock market in Canada, and 7th largest in the world by market capitalization.  It is widely recognized as being a world leader in mining and oil & gas stocks. In fact, there are more than 400 oil & gas companies listed on the exchange and its sister juniot market, the TSX Venture Exchange, with a combined total market capitalization exceeding $500 billion.
